The San Francisco Choral Society goes Gallic for its latest concert, with French and French-influenced vocal works by Gabriel Faure, Morten Lauridsen and even Leonard Bernstein. Calvary Presbyterian is the perfect setting for stirring pieces like Faure's Requiem, which the composer intended to be "...dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest," and Bernstein's The Lark, composed for the play Joan of Arc. But no salute to France would be complete without a little l'amour, accomplished via the lovely, light sounds of Faure's Madrigal, an ode to young romance, and Lauridsen's Dirait-On, which turns Rainer Maria Rilke's rose-inspired poetry into "joyous, playful" choral settings.
