Museum of Sex
233 Fifth AvenueNew York, NY 10016
It's the most stimulating museum in New York! With its continuing mission to preserve and present the history, evolution and cultural significance of human sexuality in a factual, informative and entertaining environment, the Museum of Sex features revolving exhibitions throughout the year. Currently on view are Hardcore: A Century & a Half of Obscene Imagery, documenting 150 years of hardcore illustration, photography and film between 1821 (America's first obscenity trial) and 1972 (the release of Deep Throat); Known/Unknown: Private Obsession and Hidden Desire in Outsider Art, showcasing rarely seen works by self-taught artistic masters who have worked outside the continuum of art history; Night Fever: New York Disco 1977-1979, The Bill Bernstein Photographs, exploring the sexually and socially radical multiculturalism embraced by the New York disco clubs of the late '70s; and Objectxxx: Artifacts of Sexuality, featuring historical items and ephemera (like an antique hand-powered vibrator from the Museum's permanent collection) alongside contemporary innovations. And don't miss the critically acclaimed exhibit, The Sex Lives of Animals, plus an eclectic mix of erotic art and realia in Spotlight on the Permanent Collection. Enjoy coffee and tea beverages and bites at the Nice & Sweet Cafe, specialty cocktails, beer and wine in the Play bar/den/lounge, and a one-of-a-kind selection of gift items, souvenirs and books in the MoSex store.
